There’s No Such Thing as Two Left Feet!- Everyone can learn to Ballroom Dance!
Ah, the old cliche’ of I can’t dance because I have two left feet….such a hugely popular statement but what I find profoundly saddening about it is that there are people who truly believe it. They think they are clumsy, or ungraceful, or unteachable…but it is COMPLETELY UNTRUE! Dancing is a learned skill. It is a skill that Gives you Grace, Poise, Balance, Mobility, and so on and so on!! And ANYONE can learn it!! Dancing is about so much more than how you feel before you ever try. It’s about an experience that most people can’t even put into words. As you look back from where you started to the dancer you have become there is a proud delightful joy, and moments you would never trade.
Ballroom dancing starts with simple movement or walking steps… Forward, backward, left, & right… Moves people do everyday. Then you build on those simple steps, improving just walking, and becoming a dancer. For those in wheelchairs, moving forward, backward, and turning left and right is all you will need to know to start dancing.
Then a partner becomes part of your steps or movement and soon you are communicating without words. Some call this the “Miracle of Dance“. Connecting with another person and sharing the moment of a song is sometimes more kindness than some people experience all day. In this plugged in world of smartphones, movies, and social media we often forget to turn them off, connect, and engage face to face.
Music is added and you start to experience the freedom of expressing what the music has always felt. People naturally walk in a rhythm, which is why musical beat workouts even exist. The funny part is that we actually have to stop thinking so hard to feel what we need to do. Dancing a a meditative and relaxing form of fun and stress relief that ANYONE can do!
Dancing builds strength and endurance over time and is a low-impact workout. Used as physical therapy for many, we have seen it improve posture, balance, weight, and so much more. People that could only dance for 5 to 10 minutes at a time go on to being able to dance for an hour! Dancing aids if not cures depression and has been used for many centuries to improve the mental and physical well- being of a person.
So remember, if you can move you can dance! Stop by anytime to trade in that extra “left foot” for a right…we would love the privilege of helping you Experience Ballroom!
